Crate Training For Dogs

Let's Talk About Crates

Crates are positive ands provide a safe, secure space for your dog (especially when you're being annoying).

They are not a tool for punishment and shouldn't be used to confine your dog for long periods of time.

Patience is key

  • Make it comfortable, add soft blanket and beds.
  • Add a soft chew for your pup or another safe toy.
  • Some dogs love a blanket/cover over part of their crate, particularly if they are nervous as this helps them feel safe and secure.
  • Ensure there is access to water.
  • Keep it in an area away from sunlight or draught.

Training Tips

  • A good introduction to the crate is critical to a successful relationship, and slow and steady wins the race.
  • Slowly introduce them to the crate, don't just lock them in there and wait.
  • Start placing some treats in there and/or a piece of clothing with your scent to create a positive connection.
  • Once they begin to explore the crate, throw some treats inside.
  • Once they are comfortable with being inside the crate, start feeding their meals in there and close the door. Open the door when they are finished.
  • Continue the process until they are happy being left for longer that 10 minutes.

Out of sight

  • It's time for the ultimate test, leaving them alone whilst being out of the room.
  • A good time to practice this is when all their needs have been met.
  • A good walk, some obedience training and some positive interaction.
  • Only once all their needs have been met would it be a good time to try and leave the room whilst they're in the crate.
  • Place a slow feeding kong, close the crate and leave the room, again slow and steady.
  • Leave the room for 5 minutes, then 10 minutes and eventually 30 minutes.

Your pup is now successfully crate trained!

Dogs are social animals, they love to feel as though they are part of the family, and they are!

Sometimes though, we have guests who are scared or don't like our pups. This doesn't mean we lock them outside. They are alone and separate from the family and this will have a negative affect on your doggo's wellbeing.

Instead use the crate! Their crate is now a safe, secure space and they will love going there. Providing their needs have been met.
